Our article here looks at the record for the most wides bowled in a match in the IPL both by teams and an individual bowler.
We’ve already covered the most wides bowled in an innings by an individual team, an unwanted record held by the Rajasthan Royals who sent down 13 wides in a match in 2015. However, the game doesn’t feature in our list here of the worst 3 IPL matches in terms of wides bowled.
Mumbai Indians v RCB, 2015, 20 wides
High scoring matches tend to lead to more wides being bowled no doubt as bowlers strive to keep the ball away from the hitting zone. This match was a perfect example of this as Mumbai Indians racked up 209 from their 20 overs with RCB bowling 8 wides in the process.
When it then came to RCB’s turn to bat Mumbai sent down what at the time was a record number of wides in an innings with 12 including 4 in row from Jasprit Bumrah to Chris Gayle. To this date, those 4 wides in a row remain the most by an individual bowler back to back with the 6th over of the innings lasting 10 deliveries!
Despite the 2 free overs that Mumbai Indians offered up, RCB fell 18 runs short of their target. View the full scorecard here
Rajasthan Royals v Mumbai Indians, 2012, 19 wides
Mumbai were again involved in this one as they were guilty of bowling 10 wides in The Royals innings as the home side made 162. However, it didn’t come close to costing them as Mumbai Indians romped to a 10 wicket victory with Tendulkar and Dwayne Smith seeing them home. View the full scorecard here
Mumbai were helped in there pursuit of the target in no small part by the 9 wides that Rajasthan bowled which included a record 6 by Shaun Tait (see list of most wides by a bowler in a match in the IPL below)
Punjab Kings v Royal Challengers Bangalore, 2022, 19 wides
Perhaps it was the fact that this was the opening match of IPL 2022 and the bowlers were a little rusty that lead to them missing the target so often. Again though, there was some powerful hitting on display by both teams that undoubtedly forced the bowling teams to look to keep it out of the batsmens’ arc.
Mohammed Siraj joined the exclusive club in having bowled the most wides in an innings (see below) while RCB teammate Harshal Patel also chipped in with 5 wides.

Mumbai Indians v CSK, 2007, 18 wides
Yet another match involving Mumbai Indians that saw a lot of wide deliveries although in this game it was more CSK’s doing as they bowled 11 of them which at the time was a record number of wides in an innings of an IPL match.
Again, a stroke making batsmen, this time in the form of Sanath Jayasuriya, got going and left the CSK bowlers with very little idea of what line to bowl at him ultimately resulting in a whole heap of extras being conceded on their way to a 9 wicket defeat. View the full scorecard here
Rajasthan Royals v RCB, 2020, 18 wides
In a close fought game like this which was ultimately won with just 2 balls to spare, you’d imagine that either side would have been disappointed to have lost given the number of wide balls they gave up. In the end it was Rajasthan Royal who bowled 11 wides to RCB’s 7 who lost the game with just 2 balls to spare. View the full scorecard here
Most wides by a bowler in an IPL match
The most wides by a bowler in an IPL match is a record held jointly by 4 players who have sent down 6 wides during their allotted overs.
Shane Harwood, Rajasthan Royals v KXIP, 2009 – The former Australian international only played a handful of IPL games including this one vs Kings XI where he actually bowled a fairly tidy spell of 0-26 from his 4 overs albeit that he ultimately sent down 30 deliveries. View the full scorecard here
Lasith Malinga, Mumbai Indians v KXIP, 2009 – Malinga is better known as the all leading wicket taker in the IPL but he also holds the unwanted record of having bowled the most wides in an innings with this effort also coming in the 2009 IPL. View the full scorecard here
Shaun Tait, Rajasthan Royals v Mumbai Indians 2010 & v Mumbai Indians 2012 – The man known as ‘Wild Thing’ seems like an appropriate addition to a list of bowlers who have bowled the most wides in an IPL match. When he got it right, Tait could be a dangerous weapon but when he got it wrong he did have a habit of spraying it about as was the case on these 2 occassions both against Mumbai Indians. Scorecard 1 2
Mohammed Siraj, RCB v PBKS, 2022 – After 10 years of waiting, someone finally joined the club! Siraj ended up conceding 59 from his 4 overs as PBKS chased down 205 with an over to spare. Incredibly, Siraj was on a hattrick at one point in this innings. He didn’t get it and instead sent down a wide with things only getting worse from that point on! View highlights here
