Australia vs West Indies T20 head to head

Australia AUS vs WI West Indies T20 head to head looks at the historical record of these 2 international teams in the shortest format of the game including number of wins, highest and lowest scores in matches involving both and the top player achievements in T20 fixtures between Australia AUS and WI West Indies.

Time was that clashes between these 2 cricketing powerhouses in all formats would be hotly anticipated but in the modern era it is only in T20s that the West Indies can claim to have at least parity with their Australian rivals in the head to head stakes.

Equally that intense rivalry that existed between 2 teams that dominated world cricket in the later half of the 20th Century has carried over to the T20 era perhaps most famously in the comments made by several of the Australian players ahead of a crucial World Cup match back in 2014.

However, it was the West Indies who have often had the last laugh particularly within the World Cup, winning their last 2 encounters against Australia on the biggest stage and sending the Aussies out of the tournament on both occasions.

Highest score in an Australia vs West Indies T20 match

The West Indies score of 205 for 4 is their highest in T20 matches vs Australia. The record total came in the semi-finals of the 2012 World Cup in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Having won the toss and elected to bat on a slow turning pitch, the West Indies set about putting up a total that would ultimately be well beyond Australia and help them cruise through to the World Cup final. Even Chris Gayle who made an unbeaten 75 from 41 balls admitted “We didn’t expect that sort of big total”.

Gayle though was particularly brutal against Australia’s left-arm spinner Xavier Doherty who despite finding spin was clubbed for 48 from 3 overs including being hit for 7 x 6s, as well as part timer David Hussey whose 2 overs went for 22.

Throughout the middle period, Gayle found good support from Marlon Samuels and Dwayne Bravo who at the very least helped to turn the scoreboard over at better than a run a ball. Once they were out Kieron Pollard came to the crease and crashed 38 from 15 balls including 4 sixes in the final over off the hapless Doherty.

Lowest score in an Australia vs West Indies T20 match

The West Indies total of 105 all out is the lowest in a T20 match featuring WI and AUS. The record low total vs Australia came at Gros Islet in the group stages of the 2010 World Cup.

Having won the toss and elected to bat in front of their home fans, the West Indies capitulated losing 5 wickets to Australia’s part-time bowlers David Hussey and Steve Smith. Captain Chris Gayle went first to just the second ball of the innings and while experienced duo Shiv Chanderpaul and Ramneresh Sarwan were able to steady the ship once the former was out the wheels really began to fall off for the West Indies as they lost 6 wickets for 38 runs in the space of 46 balls.

Sarwan had to watch the catastrophe unfold from the non-strikers end but any hopes that West Indies had of getting somewhere close to a competitive total were dashed when he too was out in the 15th over leaving the tail to attempt to bat out the remaining overs which they failed to do as Shane Watson returned to clean up last man Suliman Ben.

West Indies record low total vs Australia saw them crash out of the World Cup that they were hosting and the performance in general resulted in an apology from WI captain Chris Gayle to fans across the Caribbean.

Top score by a batsman in Australia vs West Indies T20 fixtures

The top score by a batsman in Australia vs West Indies T20 matches is Chris Gayle’s 88 hit at the Kennington Oval during the 2009 T20 World Cup.

Having been set a total of 170 to win the game, the West Indies captain lead from the front as he smashed an Aussie pace attack that included the likes of Brett Lee and Mitchel Johnson to all parts of the Oval. Indeed at one point Gayle hit Lee for a six that travelled out of the stadium and down Harleyford Road following it up 2 balls later with a six that landed on top of the Bedser Stand and was measured at a distance of 105m!

Alongside Andre Fletcher, Gayle helped WI reach 83 without loss during the powerplay, essentially ending the game as a contest. Gayle brought up his 50 from just 23 balls and while he wasn’t quite able to see his side over the line, by the time he was out WI required just 13 runs from 33 balls with 8 wickets in hand.

Best bowling figures in Australia vs West Indies T20 fixtures

The best bowling figures in a T20 match between Australia and the West Indies were claimed by Obed McCoy who took 4 for 26 during the 5 match T20 series that took place at the Daren Sammy Stadium in 2021.

The match saw an incredible comeback from the West Indies or a monumental collapse by Australia depending on which perspective you choose to take. The Aussies seemed to be cruising towards WI’s modest total of 145 when they found themselves 105 for 4 at the half way point but contrived to collapse to 127 all out becoming the first team in the history of T20 internationals to lose a game when the required run rate was under 5 having already posted 100 runs.

McCoy had already taken the wicket of Josh Philippe with his first ball of the match before the collapse began but returned to claim 3 more as alongside WI’s spinners as Australia managed to lose their final 6 wickets for 19 runs!
