Highest score in a T20 match at the National Stadium Grenada

The highest score in a T20 match at the National Stadium Grenada was made by Ireland who struck a total of 208 in the first innings of the inaugural iT20 played at this venue.

Having won the toss and elected to bat first on a good pitch with short boundaries, Ireland knew that against a powerful West Indies batting line-up they’d need to score big and openers Paul Stirling and Kevin O’Brien didn’t disappoint with a blistering partnership of 154 from just 75 balls to lay the foundations for their impressive total.

The 93 runs that the pair scored in the powerplay was a record in all international T20 cricket as they smashed a relatively inexperienced West Indies new ball attack to all corners. Things might have been worse for the hosts had Dwayne Bravo and Hayden Walsh not slowed the scoring in the middle and death overs with Ireland only managing to score 52 runs from the last 7 overs.

South Africa’s score of 146 for 9 is the lowest total recorded in an international T20 match at the National Stadium Grenada.

Having won the toss and elected to field, South Africa were set 168 to win but lost a couple of early wickets in the form of Reza Hendricks and captain Tema Bavuma. On a pitch that had proved difficult to score on once the ball was soft, South Africa were at about par when the fielding restrictions were ended but managed to lose wickets at regular intervals which checked their progress.

Star man Quinton de Kock played the only innings of any real substance but when he was dismissed at the start of the 18th over for 60 from 43 balls with the visitors still needing 42 runs from the final 3 overs then any lingering hopes South Africa may have had were extinguished.

Bravo clearly enjoyed the slower surfaces at the National Grenada Stadium and the fact that he was usually saved until the death where his variety of change up deliveries caused the South African batsmen plenty of problems.

In fact, in this match all 4 of his victims came from the 16th over onwards with 3 of the wickets falling to catches to Lindl Simmons in the circle including the prize scalp of Quinton de Kock who chased a wide slower ball from Bravo that he hit straight to Simmons at backward point, all but ending South Africa’s hopes of chasing their target.
