South Africa vs West Indies T20 head to head

South Africa RSA vs WI West Indies T20 head to head looks at the historical record of these 2 international teams in the shortest format of the game including number of wins, highest and lowest scores in matches involving both and the top player achievements in T20 fixtures between South Africa RSA and WI West Indies.

Throughout the noughties RSA had the upper hand over WI in T20 head to head matches with the West Indies solitary victory over South Africa in the first 8 years of T20 cricket coming in a rain effected game in St. George’s Park. However, there after West Indies began to dominate this match up with Chris Gayle and a generally strong WI team in this format winning a series in South Africa as well as their group game at the 2015 World Cup.

Both South Africa and West Indies have been increasingly well known for exporting some of the best T20 players to the biggest franchise leagues around the world including the IPL. However, whether those players turn out for their countries very much depends on the time of year and their prior commitments to the multi-million dollar contracts they have to play abroad. At full strength RSA and WI have 2 of the best T20 squads in world cricket.

Highest score in a South Africa vs West Indies T20 match

The highest score in an RSA vs WI T20 match is the 236 for 5 made by the West Indies at the Wanderers, Johannesburg in 2015.

The Wanderers which has a reputation as being a highest scoring venue for T20 fixtures saw a heap of runs in this fixture as South Africa piled up 231 from their 20 overs thanks largely to Faf du Plessis who struck 119 (see below) for the home side.

However, in response the West Indies got off to a flying start with Chris Gayle, Dwayne Smith and Marlon Samuels getting their team ahead of the required rate and up to 86 for 1 at the end of the powerplay. From there Gayle and Samuels kept going adding a partnership of 152 from just 71 deliveries.

When Gayle was out for 90 from 41 balls and Samuels followed soon after for 60 from 39 then South Africa must have thought they were back in with a chance. However, the incredible power of the West Indies team in the T20 format came to bear as Kieron Pollard, Andre Russell, Dwyane Bravo and Darren Sammy all played cameos to keep the momentum going and see WI home with 4 balls to spare!

Lowest score in a South Africa vs West Indies T20 match

The lowesr score in a T20 match involving RSA and WI is South Africa’s 58 for 8 made in 2007 in Port Elizabeth. However, it should be noted that the game was rained effected and reduced to 13 overs a side.

Despite the over reduction, South Africa struggled and at one point found themselves 12 for 6 as Jerome Taylor ripped through their top order. Only a stubborn unbeaten 28 from number 9 Johan Botha saved South Africa from total humiliation.

The lowest scores for both sides in a match that saw the full allotment of overs came in 2010 in North Sand, Antigua where South Africa managed to defend a total of 120 by just a single run.

The West Indies started their chase poorly by losing Gayle and Fletcher early on before Dwayne Bravo and Shiv Chanderpaul looked to build through the middle overs on a pitch that proved difficult to score on. Ultimately the 24 they left themselves to score off the final 2 overs was just too much as South Africa closed out a nail biter of a T20 game.

This is the very same match that West Indies recorded the highest score in a T20 fixture between the 2 sides. Batting first, RSA made 231 largely off the back of a magnificent innings of 119 from their captain at the time who took just 46 balls to reach his century, hitting 11 x 4s and 5 x 6s along the way.

At the time, Du Plessis’s innings was the 3rd highest score by a batsmen in T20 international cricket.

The best bowling figures in a T20 match between South Africa and the West Indies were claimed by Ryan Mclaren who took 5 for 19 from 3.5 overs to deliver victory to RSA in a tight match against WI.

The feat took place on the same pitch with which the lowest scoring game between these 2 sides was recorded and again shows that it was a bowler friendly surface. Chasing 137 to win, the West Indies were quickly reduced to 28 for 2 when McLaren dismissed both openers inside the powerplay.

McLaren then had to wait until the 16th over before returning to claim his third wicket, the prize scalp of Kieron Pollard who was looking to set himself for a late charge at the total. With WI needing 20 off the final over of the game, Mclaren returned again to ensure there would be no last gasp drama and in doing so took 2 further wickets to bowl WI out 10 runs short of their target.
